The City of Orlando’s Solid Waste Division picks up household garbage, recycling and yard waste once a week each, from carts at the curb by 6 a.m. on pickup day. Your days depend on your street: enter your address in the city’s pickup schedule tool, which can also send you reminders. The division’s phone is 407-246-2314.

First, check you are in the city
An Orlando mailing address does not always mean city service. Much of the area with an Orlando address is unincorporated Orange County, where trash pickup is handled by Orange County Utilities, not the city. The city’s service area lookup tells you which applies to your address. The rest of this page is for city customers.
The weekly schedule
| What | How often | How to set it out |
|---|---|---|
| Garbage | Once a week | Bagged, in the city cart |
| Recycling | Once a week | Loose, in the city recycling cart |
| Yard waste | Once a week | In bags or tied bundles at the curb |
| Large items | On yard waste day | At the curb, up to two free |
Cart rules. Carts may go out from 5 p.m. the night before until 6 a.m. on pickup day. Set them no more than 2 feet from the curb, at least 2 feet from mailboxes, trees and utility boxes, with the handle and wheels facing your house. Do not overload the cart or pile things on top. A cart left at the curb the morning after pickup may bring a $25 fee, the city says.
Billing for city trash service runs through OUC and appears on the monthly utility bill. The city also offers a pickup service for residents with disabilities; ask the division.
Holidays
The city collects residential garbage on every holiday except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, its observed holidays page says. In 2026, those fall on Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Dec. 25. Check the pickup calendar for your address in the weeks of those holidays to see when your carts will be collected.
What goes in the recycling cart
The city’s What Goes Where guide accepts:
- Plastic bottles and containers, empty and clean, caps on.
- Glass bottles and jars, empty and clean, lids off.
- Metal: aluminum, steel and tin cans, empty and clean.
- Cardboard, flattened.
- Paper: newspapers, paper bags, junk mail, sheets of paper and drink cartons.
Keep out food waste, plastic bags, polystyrene foam cups and containers and aluminum food pans. Empty recycling straight into the cart; bags tangle the sorting machines.
Yard waste: “Think 4”
Yard waste means grass clippings, leaves, branches and twigs only. The city’s limits:
- 4 cubic yards a week, about what fits in a pickup truck bed.
- Branches no more than 4 inches across and 4 feet long, tied in bundles of up to 40 pounds.
- Bags up to 40 pounds each.
Place it at the curb, not in the street, and keep it off storm drains, water meters and away from mailboxes, poles and hydrants. Dirt, rock, fencing and treated wood are not yard waste. Tree services should haul away what they cut; the city charges to remove tree trimmings.
Bulk and large items
The city picks up two large items free on your yard waste day, with no appointment, as long as crews can load them by hand, its large item page says. That covers household refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers, sofas, chairs, dressers, TV consoles, toilets and sinks. Take the doors off refrigerators and freezers before you put them out.
Items too big or heavy to load by hand need the claw truck, at a cost that depends on what you are throwing away; call 407-246-2314 to schedule. For a cleanout, the city also offers a roll-off dumpster or a dumpster bag.
Paint, batteries and other hazardous waste
Hazardous waste cannot go in any cart and cannot be collected at the curb. That includes wet paint, pool chemicals, gasoline and oil, pesticides, fertilizers, propane bottles, fluorescent bulbs and lithium-ion batteries, which can start fires in trucks. Take them free to an Orange County site, the city says:
- Orange County Landfill, 5901 Young Pine Road, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Also takes propane bottles.
- Porter Road Transfer Station, 1326 Good Homes Road, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Both answer at 407-836-6601. Dry, empty paint cans can go in the garbage cart.
New or broken cart
Request a cart online through the city’s cart request page or by phone. The city repairs carts with fixable parts and replaces only cracked or broken ones, usually within 10 to 14 days.
What this means for you
- Look up your three pickup days once and sign up for reminders.
- Large items go out on yard waste day, two at a time.
- Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day are the only holidays with no garbage pickup.
- After a hurricane or storm, report debris through the city’s storm debris form.
